The first Nobel Prizes were awarded 125 years ago, in 1901.
Since then, the prizes have been awarded annually – with a few exceptions, including during World War I (1914-1918) and II (1939-1945).
The Nobel Prizes are announced each year in October and are presented to the new laureates at ceremonies on 10 December, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death.
As stipulated in Nobel’s will, the Nobel Prizes in Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine and Literature are awarded in Stockholm, Sweden, while the Nobel Peace Prize is awarded in Oslo, Norway.
