UN Backs Africa-led push for more accurate world maps
The UN General Assembly has backed an Africa-led push for more accurate world maps, voting 164-1 for wider use of equal-area projections such as Equal Earth.

The US was the only country opposed, with six abstentions. The move targets distortions in the 457-year-old Mercator projection, which makes Africa appear far smaller than its true scale.

Africa covers about 30.4 million km², roughly 14 times Greenland’s area. The resolution is non-binding.
