Topic: Urban Heat Island and Energy Systems

Supervisors: Associate Prof. Adams Wai Kin Kong, Dr. Sundar Raj Thangavelu, Dr. Riccardo Talami

Openings: 3 PhD Scholars

Duration: 4 years, Full-time

Start: January 2027

Location: Nanyang Technological University, Singapore


Research Scopes:

Scope 1: Urban microclimate modeling and simulation

- Use tools to model urban microclimate at different scales

- Develop parametric scripts to generate large urban microclimate data

- Extract building & urban physics principles from simulators
Scope

 2: AI for microclimate simulation

- Train AI models to speed up microclimate simulation using Scope 1 data

- Develop new AI models using physics + data to improve speed and accuracy

- AI scheme to identify key factors of urban heat island effect


Scope 3: Assessment and mitigation

- Apply urban heat island models for assessment and mitigation

- Use optimization to determine optimal mitigation strategies

- Validation with established energy system modeling tools


Eligibility:

Student 1:

- Master’s in system, mechanical, civil engineering, physics, environmental engineering, building science, architectural engineering, or building technology

- Second upper honours + strong modeling, optimization, simulation tools background

- Preferably research experience in urban microclimate/building performance simulation


Students 2 & 3:

- Master’s in computer science, electronic engineering, physics, or math

- Second upper honours + solid deep learning, transformer, graph models, optimization background

- Proficiency in Python and deep learning toolboxes

- Preferably AI research + publications in ICML, NeurIPS, ICLR, AAAI

- Knowledge of numerical methods + physics-based simulation is a plus


Desirable Skills: Research experience, analytical/problem-solving, strong communication, independent + team work
